Friends of Crater Lake National Park Restructures!
by George Buckingham
President of the Board

As boards mature, a fundamental change in the way they operate often occurs. This often takes many years and such is the case with the Friends of Crater Lake National Park. Through our "Visioning" process and by observing the volume and nature of the work we do, we have come to the conclusion that we need to change the way we do business.

Since our inception in 1993, most of the work occurs at Board meetings with the Board as a whole performing said work. The number and complexity of our projects has increased dramatically. Hence, we are shifting to a model where each Board member assumes responsibilities as a committee chairperson. Actually, the chairperson doesn't have to be a board member. That individual then seeks out others to fill the committee. The committee then determines how it will achieve its particular goal and proceeds to implement that plan. Board meetings primarily consist of committee updates, reports and approval of plans and accomplishments. The Board, as a whole or as a body, will now focus more on determining strategic goals and objectives and monitoring committee progress in achieving those goals rather than implementing them as a body.

This, of course, increases the level of responsibility for each individual board member and assumes that more people in the general membership will assist those committee chairpersons. The time commitment required for such assistance will vary greatly from committee to committee as will the nature of expertise needed and the actual work involved. There will be something for everyone so I encourage all members to be "open minded" when asked if they would be willing to help out one of these over-worked and dedicated committee chairpersons. In this instance, please DON"T just say "No" without discussing the possibility. In fact, take the initiative and give one of them a call!
