Crater Lake National Park Centennial by Glen Kaye Coordinator of 2002 Even as you read this, plans to recognize the 2002 centennial of Crater Lake National Park continue to develop. As we have noted before, this is an extraordinary opportunity to cultivate public understanding and appreciation about one of the great natural resources in America. Yes, there will be special events, and perhaps even a cake and some champagne, but most important, the milestone can serve as a wonderful vehicle to bring renewed commitment to what the park is and ought to be in American life. Equally important, whatever is planned must fit several criteria: centennial projects cannot detract from the ability of the staff to preserve park resources and protect people, they have to be appropriate to the park, they must further and not detract from core staff responsibilities. One example is an exciting project already underway. KSYS, the public television station in Medford, Oregon is most enthusiastic about the idea of producing a one hour video on the history of the park. In fact, they think that this should be produced as a high definition program, and be the first program they air in this new format when they make the transition to HDTV. Such a program could be broadcast on other affiliates of Oregon Public Broadcasting, and also be provided to other channels such as National Geographic and Discovery. What a wonderful way to reach large audiences! Such a project has major costs, of course, and demonstrates how your financial support makes a difference. We are in dialogue with other institutions about projects that can have impact, and will keep you advised as they crystallize. |

Superintendent's Report by Chuck Lundy Superintendent Crater Lake National Park As I move into the second half of my first year at Crater Lake, I look back fondly on all the new experiences and people that I have been fortunate enough to meet. I have been pleased to find that Crater Lake National Park enjoys virtually universal adulation. Wherever my travels have taken me, when I mention that I work for the National Park Service at Crater Lake, I'm greeted with stories of the wonderful experiences that people have had here and their love of this magnificent national treasure. I also recall that shortly after hearing of my new assignment at Crater Lake, finding out that the Park had a formal Friends Group. I was thrilled to learn more about the Group and of its many contributions to the Park. This winter I also attended my first Friends Group Board meeting, and thoroughly enjoyed the chance to become better acquainted. We had a great time talking about the Park, the Friends Group's role and of some upcoming Park activities that will hopefully spark the interest and support of the Group. One of the big topics was the upcoming celebration of the Park's 100th Anniversary, which occurs in 2002. We all agreed that it will be a major event and spoke about some of the things that might be part of the celebration and specifically how the Friends of Crater Lake might be involved. I was very pleased to learn that the Board had already been anticipating the event and had successfully approached Mr. Glen Kaye of Salem, to serve as a Coordinator of the 2002 celebration. Glen is of course recently retired from an outstanding career with the NPS, which included a tour at Crater Lake as an interpreter, before eventually retiring as the Regional Chief of Interpretation in Santa Fe. There are very bright days ahead for Crater Lake and I am excited to be a part of it. I'm especially looking forward to working with all of you in strengthening this important partnership with the Friends of Crater Lake. |
