Friends of Volume 5 No. 3 * Fall 2000 |

PRESIDENT'S REPORT Last week the Registration for the Christmas TubaFest came in my mail. Winter has come, the holiday season is coming fast and it is time for the last Friends Newsletter for 2000. This weekend I attended the Winter RimDesk Training on Saturday. It was a great winter day at Crater Lake, nicer then it was in Klamath Falls because Crater Lake was above the fog. Ranger Kevin Bacher had a good training session for the Friends. Again this winter, Crater Lake will need Friends to staff the winter rim desk because of a shortage of park service staff on the weekends. I hope Friends visited the Lava Beds 75th Anniversary Celebration. Unfortunately some anniversary activities were the day of the Rim Desk training, but I did visit the Lava Beds a couple of weeks ago. The Friends had a very nice Annual Meeting last month, October 7. I want to thank all of you that attended and gave reports and helped arrange the annual meeting. We had interesting programs in the morning, a lovely dinner at the Watchman Restaurant, and the afternoon the annual meeting went really good. The Friends really had a beautiful fall day at Crater Lake for the Annual Meeting. Please mark October 6, 2001 for next year's Annual Meeting. I expect there to be a lot going on. Thanks to the Crater Lake Trail Crew for their expertise with the August Project Weekend. We relocated a mile of the Crater Peak Trail to a new trail head at the Videa Falls Picnic Area.Parts of the trail followed a old grade of the Rim Drive. The Friends rescued plants on the new trail for replanting at portions of the Videa Falls Picnic Area that needs restoration. And Jan Wilson brought and prepared a wonderful Salmon Meal for the Saturday evening dinner.
I was saddened to hear of Jean Howe's passing in November. Jean and Wayne are founding members of the Friends. It was always nice to see Wayne attend the Friends Board Meetings in Roseburg. As part of the Friends 2002 Celebration, Wayne and Jean wrote a recollection of their work at Crater Lake. The first article was in the Summer Newsletter and the final article is in this newsletter. My thoughts are with Wayne and his family during this time of sorrow. Some of my highlights with the Friends in 2000 were George Buckingham's Retirement in the tent on a stormy night here in Klamath Falls, welcoming Dave Brennan and having dinner with him at the Mongolian Grill, and working with the hard working Crater Lake Trail Crew on the August project weekend. Thanks for all the good times in 2000. Have a nice Holiday Season and please participate in Friends Events in 2001.
Dear Friends; As we move ever closer to the conclusion of the year 2000 and begin plans for another wonderful year at Crater Lake National Park in 2001, it is time to say Thank You to all the Friends of Crater Lake. On behalf of all the employees of Crater Lake I want you to know how much your role is appreciated. Many, if not most of America's National Park area's do not enjoy the tremendous benefits that Crater Lake realizes every year, because of your contributions. I know that each of you is attached in a special and enduring way to the stewardship responsibility that we each hold in such special esteem. It is obviously more than simply a job for those of us who wear the Arrowhead, and clearly it's become a labor of love for the Friends. We are brought together because of the deep and abiding care we feel for this magical place. The Park's have a way of bringing out the best in people. The Friends of Crater Lake are part of this larger family, and without whose assistance, our achievements would be considerably lessened. Whether its building new Trails or staffing the Fire Lookout, or shouldering responsibilities for the upcoming Centennial Celebration, you have always been right there and willing to help. Please don't ever stop!! Your good works and the spirit in which it is done is truly one of this Park's greatest endowments. The Park staff and I wish you Happy Holiday's and we look forward to another exciting and fulfilling year of working together with the Friends of Crater Lake. Sincerely, Chuck...
