PRESIDENT'S REPORT
by Greg Reddell

Crater Lake would appreciate a good turn out of Friends at the public meetings for the General Management Plan. Please participate in this important public input effort. If you know other people who like Crater Lake as much as we do, tell them about these meetings or bring them with you.

It has been a short winter, Friends who have visited Crater Lake or look at the web cam from the Watchman Restaurant windows have seen there hasn't been much snow this winter. The windows weren't buried in the snow drift as they usually are during my Winter Rim Desk Weekends. Chief Ranger and Friends Liaison Dave Brennan has a article about the snow and I added a picture of the snow from the Crater Lake Lodge Company's web cam.

I have had a real nice winter. The Christmas Tuba Festival was fun and I have had lots of musical things going on since. In addition to the Klamath Falls Symphony, this winter I played in the band at the Linkville Playhouse here in Klamath Falls for the play 'The Boyfriend'. It was a lot of fun and I saw Friends of Crater Lake attending the play.

An exciting experience this spring for me will be a detail for work at the Bureau of Land Management Office in Washington, D.C. I am excited about this chance to work in the Nation's Capital for 2 months. I will be working in the Branch of Renewable Resources not to far from the White House.

I want to thank Dave Brennan, Judy Buckingham, and Glenn Kaye for their articles in this Newsletter. Glenn is busy with 2002 things, check out his article. Glen, George Buckingham and I attended a 2002 meeting with park staff in March. Judy has a interesting article in our continuing series of park history about the preschool. If any Friends have a story they want to tell about Crater Lake send it to a board member or me.

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE
by Dave Brennan, Chief Ranger, Crater Lake National Park

As we prepare for our centennial celebration next year, we are also beginning a major planning effort to develop a general management plan (GMP) for the park. The GMP will determine the long-term direction for resource management, visitor use and facility needs at Crater Lake National Park.

The GMP will provide a framework for managing the park for the next 10-15 years by addressing three major questions:

  • What is the purpose and significance of the park? This will describe why the park was established, what its overall mission is and its place in regional, national and international contexts.

  • What kind of a place do we want the park to be? We will strive to create a vision for the desired future conditions in the park for the 21st century and beyond by defining our goals for protecting park resources and natural processes, determining appropriate types and levels of visitor uses, and defining necessary park facilities and operations.

  • How do we accomplish our vision of the park's future? This will address in general terms what actions are needed to create the desired future conditions.

We expect that it will take about three years to develop our GMP. In the spring of 2001, we are focusing on seeking out public views and concerns, refining the purpose and significance statements for the park, and compiling and analyzing information about park resources and visitor use. Since public involvement is vital to the successful development of our GMP, we invite and encourage your participation.

We have a web site at http://www.nps.gov/planning, which contains information about the Crater Lake National Park GMP, as well as other current NPS planning efforts.

Your thoughts and comments on the GMP may be sent to CRLA_GMP@nps.gov, or mailed to:

We have also scheduled a series of public meetings during the week of April 9 to allow the public to participate in the planning process. At these meetings, the GMP team will be present to explain the planning process, summarize responses received from the public so far, and answer questions and receive comments. Here is the schedule of public meetings in spring 2001:
