CRATER LAKE NATIONAL PARK
Volume 4 No. 3 * Summer 1999

President's Report
by Greg Reddell

This weekend I enjoyed a Friends activity by participating in the planting of the Collomia Mazama. The Friends had a fund camp in the Rogue River National Forest Friday night. Saturday we had a pleasant hike to the work site near the Sphagnum Bog. In spite of the heat, the planting went well. Members of the Native Plant Society joined us Saturday. This was my second volunteering to plant the Collomia Mazama. Casey Baldwin was wonderful to work with. I hope there are more projects like this the Friends can work on.

The next Friends activity is coming up this month. I hope you have August 20-22 reserved to help at Crater Lake. I hope to see you there!

The Friends board was invited to a Crater Lake Employee barbeque and potluck last week. We were welcomed and had a chance to talk with John Reynolds from the National Parks Regional Office in San Francisco.

Remember to attend the annual meeting October 2, 1999.

Vertical separator Trail Project Weekend

August 20, 21, and 22 are the dates for the 1999 Summer Project. Come and camp at Lost Creek Campground Friday and Saturday nights. Saturday morning Friends will meet at the garages near the Park Headquarters at Munson Valley for our specific job assignments at 9:00 A.M. Don't worry about being late, we will leave somebody there for awhile to help you find your way. Friends who do not wish to camp can meet the group Saturday morning there, or early birds can find a cup of coffee at Lost Creek Campground.

Friends can expect similar projects as other years: reestablishing walkways, pruning, installation of waterbars, and construction of rock culverts. There are other jobs also. Friends are needed to answer questions from park visitors who might hike by. We can use Friends to help at the camp. If you make good camp coffee, give us a hand. A camp cook is needed for Friday and Saturday evenings. Bring your own breakfast and noon lunches.

Please call a board member, Greg Hartell or Greg Reddell to register and for more information.

Vertical separator Adopt a Highway Update

The Friends have adopted for litter patrol 3.6 miles of Hwy. 62 from the Park's South Entrance to the Interpretative turnout north of Forth Klamath.

June 13, 1999: Many thanks to the 12 Friends for making the first litter patrol successful and fun. We enjoyed the wild flowers and walk afterwards to find the old Fort Klamath Ski jump.

July 31, 1999: This date proved to be a busy one for most of the Friends but the Friends ODOT contact (and new Friend Member) Rob Heyman and wife Mesheal joined Bev Hartell for the second litter patrol. These three covered about half the distance. Our thanks and we will look forward to seeing Rob and Michelle at other Friends events.

Saturday, September 11, 1999: From 9:00 to 12:00 is the next litter patrol for this season. Meet again at Annie Creek snow park. Please join us and call Greg Hartell or Greg Reddell.

Crater Lake Natural History Association
is offering 15% discount on bookstore purchases with FOCLNP membership card. Members, please present card before purchase is rung up. A big thanks to CLNHA for their help.
